Tornadoes
 
 
 
Tornadoes can occur quickly and strike with or without warning.  They are violent with winds ranging from 200-300 mph.  If you find yourself in the path of a tornado, you better be prepared.
 
 
Before a Tornado:
 
• Have a survival kit in a area that can be accessed quickly.
• Have a list of emergency and family numbers available.
• Always have a plan that has been practiced with your family in different situations (where will you meet? etc..).
• Keep a 72 hour survival kit in your car and in your home.
• Have a designated room for shelter in the bottom floor level.
• Keep close to a radio, listen to local authority’s direction concerning the tornado.
 
During a Tornado:
 
• In buildings or homes quickly go to the basement or bottom level.  Choose a room such as a closet to protect yourself.  Cover yourself with blankets if available.
• If in a car, quickly get out and find shelter.  Several deaths have come from people remaining in their cars.
• If shelter is not available lie down in a ditch or hallow and cover head with your hands.
• In buildings stay away from windows and exterior walls.  Find a small room.
• Don’t panic and follow you survival plan for the disaster.
 
After a Tornado:
 
• Carefully, inspect your home for structural damage.
• Notify friends and family of your safety.
• Administer first aid to anyone with injuries, and call emergency officials.
• If damage is done to home, call insurance agency to make a claim.
• Evaluate how you responded to the situation and what worked and what you can do better in preparing.
