Hurricanes
Hurricane are rated in categories to let you know the intensity or wind mph of the storm. Providing you with an idea of how much damage can be performed by the Hurricane. Know matter what the category of the storm is you need to be prepared for any hurricane damage to your home and family. The risk can always be more than suggested by local authorities and it vital to be safe than sorry.
Before a Hurricane:
Have a plan prepared and practiced with your family on where to go and meet.
Have contacts with survival kits (emergency numbers, friends, family, etc..)
Inspect your home, clear tree branches or items that may easily fly around and cause additional damage.
Charge cell phones, test generator and check batteries.
Have a full tank of gas or other transportation plans available.
Keep cash available to have on hand.
Board up windows, bring in outdoor furniture.
Install roof straps to help reduce damage.
Fill prescriptions as needed.
During a Hurricane:
Evacuate as directed by emergency officials. Listen closely to radio directions, it will help you know what roads out of town are best to take. Turn off water, gas and electricity.
Follow emergency plan, calling contacts, meeting with family and friends.
If remaining home during the storm, seek shelter in a small room at the lowest level in your home. Stay low under a sturdy, secure, piece of furniture.
Stay indoors and secure all external doors.
After a Hurricane:
Return only when local emergency authorities have announced that it is safe.
When returning watch out for derbis, washed out and flooded roads, animals roaming for shelter, and power lines that have fallen.
Check your home for structure damage before entering.
Call your insurance agent to make a claim.
Smell for any gas leaks, or chemical spills.
Check to ensure that the electricity and gas are turned off.
Have a professional look at your utilities to ensure they are safe before turning on.
Use your fresh water from survival kit, boiled water, or purify system, until water has been tested safe.
Where protective gloves, sunscreen, boots, and other protective clothing as you check your home and start the clean up process.
Get rid of any food that may be contaminated or spoiled.
Avoid standing water.
When cleaning look to detect any mold and carbon monoxide leaks.
Dont attempt to use your generator indoors or near open windows. Ensure that the generator is running well in an open outside area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Remove all items soaked to the backyard to be tried out.
Use chlorine bleached water to help disinfect.
Trees that have been uprooted can create multiple insects that thrive in post storm areas. You will need to treat them with repellant and nets placed around open doors and windows that were exposed during the storm.
