Floods can be caused by a aftermath of disaster such as a hurricane, tsunami, and other severe storms.  Floods are very dangers and must be taken seriously.
 
Before a Flood:
 
• Know your flood risks in your area, whether you live by a dam, lake, ocean, etc..
• Have a fresh water supply in sealed containers.
• Keep survival kits available to be accessed quickly.
• Have an emergency plan with escape routes.
• Try to maintain a full tank of gasoline in your vehicle.
• Keep sentimental, important documents and valuable items in a sealed waterproof containers or storage spaces in upper parts of home.
• Also store emergency supplies in upper levels.
• Sandbag and build trenches around home as necessary.
• Secure furniture, utilities, appliances with plastic and tape, helping to prevent water damage.
• Get flood insurance if possible.
• Check sewer backup valves.
• Remove dangerous chemicals from lower floors.
 
During a Flood:
 
• Make sure utilities (gas value, electricity) are turned off.
• Grab your survival kit.
• If you think the water is contaminated and you do not have fresh water available, boil the water or use purification systems in your survival kits.
• Follow instructions given by emergency officials by radio.
• Stay away from flooded areas, do not attempted to drive through high waters (vehicles can start to float with as little as 1 to 2 feet of water).
• Move to higher grounds.
• Always evacuate your vehicle if it stalls in water.
• High waters can trap you in your vehicle, not allowing you to open your car door.
• Do not cross a flooded area, the waters can be very swift and carry you dangerously away.
 
Post Flood:
 
• Look for leaks, structural, and chemical damages.
• Keep your electricity off while your home is drying out.
• Have a professional check your utilities before using them.
• Check drains for plugged water, empty and dry out.
• Contact your insurance company.
• You could use chlorine in the basement water to help disinfect it until cleared up.
• Get rid of food that has been in contact with the flood water.
• The cleaning up process can be overwhelming, it is important to keep a positive mental attitude.
• Be grateful for the safety of loved ones, as you attend to the job of cleaning and drying out your home.
