Emergency Prepardness Guidelines

Chances of survival after a disaster are greatly improved when people, local governments and emergency services, businesses and national governments prepare survival plans and assemble disaster supplies kits beforehand. What constitutes sufficient preparation is highly dependent on the location and the disasters that are likely to occur in the area.

Are you prepared?  Do you know what to look for in your area?
It is vital that you are aware of the dangers in your area.  Is your home on an earthquake fault line, are there power lines that are next to your home, and is there a potential mud slide by you?  When was the last disaster?  You can significantly increase your chances of survival by simply being aware of your area's potential dangers, having survival kits, food and water, and a plan in position for action.  When a disaster strikes you will need to be ready to take care of you and your family.  You can not count on the assistance from anyone.  You must be prepared for the emergency.

Food, Water, Shelter and Heat
• Survival Kit (72 hour kit) - In a place that is easy to get to and ready to grab and go.
• Drinking Water - have 3 days worth stored. That is a minimum of 6 gallons per person..
• Shelter - protection for the elements, tent, friends house, car, where will you sleep when your house is not an option?
• Heat - when the power goes down how will you keep warm, or perhaps cook food.
• Food - need a 3 day supply at the minimum.
• Communication - cell phone, radio, list of phone numbers for emergency agencies, family, and friends

Help may not be for several days.  Planning for at least 3 days before assistance may be necessary.  Practice with you family what to do.  Go through your drill once a month to keep it fresh in your mind.  Have fun with it do something fun with your family afterwards, making it a family, or roommate, night out.  This way when a real disaster occurs your family will not hesitate on what to do.  Try different situations, go over what you would do if the kids where at school or friends and you where at work.  Know how you would contact each other, have additional meeting places besides your home.

Being prepared and practicing will help provide positive mind frame and determination to believe that you will make it through.  Having this belief is as vital as being prepared and being ready gives you’re the confidence needed.
